New Zealand’s New Business Investor Work Visa: A Promising Pathway to Residency

For years, New Zealand has attracted global talent with its natural beauty, stable economy, and high quality of life. Now, the country is opening a new door for individuals who want to build a long-term future there. Beginning November 24, 2025, New Zealand will officially launch its Business Investor Work Visa—a streamlined residency pathway designed for experienced business owners and investors ready to take an active role in the local economy.

Here’s everything prospective applicants need to know.

A Faster, Clearer Route to Residency

The Business Investor Work Visa grants up to four years of residency, but its biggest advantage lies in the long-term outcome: eligibility for permanent residency through the Business Investor Resident Visa.

Applicants can choose between two investment pathways:

  • $1 million NZD investment for a three-year work-to-residency track
  • $2 million NZD investment for an accelerated one-year track

In addition to the investment, there is an application fee of $12,380 NZD, and visa holders must participate in the hands-on management or operation of the business they invest in.

Eligibility Requirements

New Zealand has set clear standards to ensure applicants bring both financial stability and genuine business expertise.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Demonstrate at least $500,000 NZD in personal funds to support themselves and their family
  • Show a strong business background, proven through factors such as
    • Ownership or leadership of a business generating $1 million NZD in annual revenue, or
    • Employment of five or more full-time staff in a previous enterprise
  • For those with senior management experience, they need to have
    • Managed a business with at least $2 million NZD annual turnover, or
    • Managed and responsible for at least 5 direct subordinates

Partners and dependent children can be included in the application, making this a viable option for families seeking long-term settlement in New Zealand.

Investment Restrictions

Applicants must invest in businesses that are at least five years old and employed at least 5 full time employees, and New Zealand has placed restrictions on certain industries. The following sectors are not eligible:

  • Gambling-related businesses
  • Fast-food franchises
  • Tobacco-linked enterprises

These limitations reflect the country’s focus on sustainable, meaningful economic contributions.

How It Compares to Other NZ Investor Visas

New Zealand already offers the Active Investor Plus Visa, but with significantly higher investment thresholds:

  • $5 million NZD for higher-risk investments
  • $10 million NZD for lower-risk options

($27,470 NZD application fee)

This option is well-suited for investors seeking a more passive role, whereas the new Business Investor Work Visa is tailored for those who want to actively participate in a New Zealand business. Since its requirements were reduced earlier this year, the Active Investor Plus Visa has already seen a strong uptake, with 189 applications in under three months.

Additional Pathways for Entrepreneurs and Remote Workers

New Zealand is also developing a pathway for startup founders with scalable, innovative ideas. For remote professionals, the existing 90-day digital nomad visa offers a short-term stay with no minimum income requirement. Only eligible for nationals of certain countries.

The Business Investor Work Visa represents a significant opportunity for seasoned business professionals seeking residency in New Zealand. With manageable investment thresholds, a clear timeline, and the potential for long-term settlement, this new pathway is poised to become one of the most attractive options for investors looking to build a future in New Zealand.
